Texas Doctor Admits to Providing Abortion in Violation of Texas Heartbeat Bill

A Washington Post opinion piece written by a Texas abortion doctor, Dr. Alan Braid, shocked readers after he admitted having violated the Texas Heartbeat bill by providing an abortion to a woman after the heartbeat was detected.

In the revolting admission, the doctor claimed to have attended and graduated medical school in the 1970s, which he says affords him the ability to understand that “abortion was an integral part of women’s health care.”

For 45 years, Braid said he performed abortions at clinics he opened and ran in Texas and Oklahoma. After Senate Bill 8 (Heartbeat Bill) went into effect, he complained that it slowed his abortion business down.

Dr. Braid wrote, “Then, this month, everything changed. A new Texas law, known as S.B. 8, virtually banned any abortion beyond about the sixth week of pregnancy. It shut down about 80 percent of the abortion services we provide.”

Pro-life advocates, who view abortion as infanticide, believe Dr. Braid not killing babies due to S.B. 8 is something to celebrate. Conservatives are thankful for all the lives that have been spared since the bill went into effect.

He said that it felt like “it is 1972 all over again.” He claimed he saw three teenagers die from botched abortions that year, coincidentally before the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.

“For me, it is 1972 all over again. And that is why, on the morning of Sept. 6, I provided an abortion to a woman who though still in her first trimester, was beyond the state’s new limit,” wrote Dr. Braid.

Braid said he “fully understood that there could be legal consequences” to his decision to kill an innocent baby protected under Texas law. Braid wrote that the woman had “a fundamental right to receive this care” but seemed to negate the child’s fundamental right to life which Texas law says supersedes the right to kill an innocent.

Braid said he killed the infant because he “wanted to make sure that Texas didn’t get away with its bid to prevent this blatantly unconstitutional law from being tested.”

He understands that he will likely be challenged in court for violating the law. Braid said, “I understand that by providing an abortion beyond the new legal limit, I am taking a personal risk, but it’s something I believe in strongly.”

Lila Rosee, a pro-life advocate and Founder of pro-life group Live Action, responded to Dr. Braid’s confession, tweeting, “He slaughtered a baby. He should go to jail.”
