Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Sends Tank-Like Vehicles to Border Following ‘Invasion’ Declaration

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the state’s military to send tank-like vehicles to 10 locations along the international border. The move follows Abbott’s “invasion” declaration from last week. According to the Washington Examiner, the declaration is the first time in modern history that a state decided the federal government has failed to protect citizens. The Texas National Guard will send 10 M113 Armored Personnel Carriers to the southern border in the upcoming days.

The tank-like vehicles are typically used to safely move troops through hazardous terrain or into locations where vehicles cannot pass. These bulletproof armored vehicles, first employed during the Vietnam War, can withstand small outside explosions.

Approximately 50 soldiers will reportedly be trained to drive the armored personnel carriers before being dispatched to the border. State officials did not disclose the location of each of the ten vehicles’ border bases. The state will also increase aircraft flights over specific areas. However, the department did not specify how many flights or helicopters would be sent down in its internal notification from November 17.

The Military Department said, “These actions are part of a larger strategy to use every available tool to fight back against the record-breaking level of illegal immigration. The Texas National Guard is taking unprecedented measures to safeguard our border and to repel and turn-back immigrants trying to cross the border illegally.” Governor Abbott explained, “I invoked the Invasion Clauses of the U.S. & Texas Constitutions to fully authorize Texas to take unprecedented measures to defend our state against an invasion. I’m using that constitutional authority, & other authorization & Executive Orders to keep our state & country safe.”
