The Country’s Strictest Abortion Bill Heads To Governor’s Desk

On Thursday, the Oklahoma legislature approved a bill that would ban all abortions except for rape, incest, or to save the mother’s life. Governor Kevin Stitt, a Republican, has said he will sign any abortion law that crosses his desk. Once signed, it will go into effect immediately.

The bill states:

“The bill bans any procedures that cause the death of an unborn child, which it defines as a “human fetus or embryo in any stage of gestation from fertilization until birth. In cases of rape or incest, the crimes must be reported to law enforcement.

Contraception will still be legal under the new law.

“It does not include the use, prescription, administration, procuring, or selling of Plan B, morning-after pills, or any other type of contraception or emergency contraception.”

Once the bill is signed, it will make Oklahoma the first state to completely ban abortion, even with Roe V Wade in tact. Planned Parenthood and other partners are taking the state to court.

A previous bill that was signed by Governor Stitt makes performing an abortion a felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. This bill will take effect later this year.

Oklahoma already prohibits abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, around six weeks. The law also allows private citizens to sue anyone who helps a woman obtain an abortion.
