Truck Driver Charged in Death of North Carolina Police Officer Mother of Three

Wednesday morning at around 3:40 a.m., tragedy hit North Carolina when a driver in a tractor-trailer truck cab struck and killed a police officer. The officer was working a collision scene on Interstate-85. She had returned to duty only days ago from maternity leave. She and other officers had just relieved officers from the previous shift at the scene.

While investigating a collision involving another tractor-trailer rig, a driver lost control of his truck and struck four CMPD patrol cars, injuring several officers and killing Mia Goodwin of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).

Officer Goodwin was pronounced dead at the scene. CMPD Police Chief Johnny Jennings said, “Today the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is hurting, we mourn the loss of police officer Mia Goodwin and the profession hurts, our city hurts. Most importantly, we need to be uplifted and uplifting each other in prayer.”

While investigating the collision scene, two other semis collided and then crashed into the patrol cars, causing several injuries and fatalities. The injured officers were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Today, WCCB is reporting CMPD detectives have charged the truck’s driver, Daniel Leon Morgan, in the collision. The charges include “Involuntary Manslaughter, Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle, Failure to Reduce Speed, and Felony Failure to Move Over for Stopped Emergency Vehicles.” Detectives also charged him with knowingly displaying fraudulent license plates.

Officer Goodwin is survived by her husband Brenton, a Charlotte firefighter, and their three children, 3 years, 1 year, and 4 months old.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up for the family.

  1. Please report on officer Holley who was ambushed, shot twice in the head and died. God bless all those who protect and serve our country every day.

  2. So very sad 😞. I drive a tractor trailer on Interstate 85 6 days a week, it’s a dark mostly straight highway in Virginia and it has a ton of accidents, many involving tractor trailers. Some of them have fallen asleep, some happen when deer run across the interstate, some happen when a tree falls across 81 in the dark. A coworker of ours was killed when a tree fell across 85 and he didn’t see it until the last second and swerved to miss it around 1:00am and went off the road and struck a standing tree. There are many other causes of these accidents, and I can almost guarantee this particular accident was not intentional but definitely looks like the truck drivers fault from what I have read. Such a tragedy that this wonderful mother, wife, and hero police officer lost her life. My heart aches for their family and friends. Prayers🙏🏼 go out to her family, friends and coworkers.
