On March 20, 2022, Twitter suspended The Babylon Bee’s account for “violating the Twitter Rules.” The Babylon Bee is a satire site popular with conservatives, but many non-political people also find it funny. Twitter censored them despite a motto that serves as a disclaimer. The Babylon Bee: “Fake News You Can Trust.”
According to Twitter, they locked the satire site’s account “Specifically for:
“Violating our rules against hateful conduct: You may not promote violence against, threaten, or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.”
Twitter’s decisions can leave even objective observers wondering why the company seems so strict with conservative content while seemingly holding content from liberal sources to a lesser standard of “hateful conduct.”
Even more specifically, Twitter cites the Bee’s offending satirical post: “The Babylon Bee’s Man of the Year is Rachel Levine.”
Regarding Twitter’s alleging “hateful conduct,” GETTR included these Bee posts:
- “Soft on Sex Crime Supreme Court Nominee Feeling Pretty Confident As She’s Being Questioned By Roomful Of Perverts.”
- “Twitter is DEFINITELY NOT censoring us right now. They are simply the best. Yay Twitter. Do NOT SUBSCRIBE to The Babylon Bee:”
- “U.S. Horses Terrified Obese Americans Will Need Them For Transportation Again.”
- And, a play on Twitter’s temporarily allowing “calls for violence,” but only against Russia on behalf of Ukraine, “Facebook To Temporarily Allow Calls For Violence Against People Who Leave Shopping Carts Rolling Around Parking Lot.”
Many people disagree with certain Bee posts and even abhor some of their sharper satirical content. However, many of those same people also wince at Twitter’s seeming inconsistency with regard to enforcing their sometimes policies.
