Ukrainian Inmates with Combat Experience to be Released from Prison to Help in War Effort

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainians in prison with military experience will be released to fight on the front lines in the battle with Russia. The inmates’ sentences will be commuted as their services will be considered a repayment to society. The Daily Mail reported that Zelensky said, “Under martial law, Ukrainians with real combat experience will be released from custody and will be able to compensate for their guilt in the hottest spots of the conflict.”

President Zelensky, who has been in office since 2019, reportedly debated whether or not to release the prisoners, and it was a difficult decision. He explained, “We have taken a decision which is not easy from the moral point of view, but which is useful from the point of view of our defenses. The key is now defense.”

Zelensky has urged people to “join the struggle against the invaders.” The general Ukrainian populace, including children, has joined the war effort. Many are functioning as a supply chain and making Molotov cocktails rather than handling guns. Zelensky has also been considering new measures to bolster his military, including forming a foreign legion for individuals who wish to fight. Additionally, he delivered a message inviting foreigners to join an “international brigade.”

For soldiers who have been fighting for five days, the inmates will be new forces. So far, the Ukrainian Armed Forces claim to have killed 4,500 Russians and damaged or destroyed hundreds of armored vehicles, roughly 150 tanks, and dozens of other planes, vessels, and missile systems. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry claims to have damaged more than 1,000 Ukrainian military sites.
