United Kingdom to Give $1.6 Billion in Military Aid to Ukraine

Officials in the United Kingdom recently announced that they will provide $1.6 billion in new military aid to Ukraine to help the nation fight against Russian aggression as Europe marks the surrender of Nazi Germany during World War Two. According to the New York Post, the British government has set aside more than $370 million in military equipment for Ukraine, including radar systems to target Russian artillery, GPS jamming technology, and night vision gear.

The package is the most the British government has spent on war since the end of the battles in Iraq and Afghanistan. Officials claimed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will meet with British arms manufacturers later in May to discuss increasing production in response to the rising demand sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

Johnson stated, “Putin’s brutal attack is not only causing untold devastation in Ukraine, it is also threatening peace and security across Europe. The UK was the first country to recognize the scale of the threat and send arms to help the Ukrainians defend themselves. We will stand by that endeavor, working with our allies to ensure Ukraine can continue to push back the Russian invasion and survive as a free and democratic country.”

On Sunday, Johnson, President Joe Biden, and global leaders from other Group of Seven nations met online with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to talk about the enhanced support. Additionally, the meeting commemorated Nazi Germany’s surrender in 1945 and aimed to demonstrate unity among Western allies. The announcements came after Zelensky said in an emotional Victory Day speech that “The evil has returned. Again!. In a different form, under different slogans, but for the same purpose.”
