Maryland Couple Claims Squatters Moved Into House They Just Bought and Won’t Leave

A couple in Maryland claims that strangers have moved into their newly purchased house and won’t leave. CBS affiliate WUSA9 reports that when the couple went to take another look at the residence and celebrate the purchase, they discovered a U-Haul truck in the driveway and people moving in. Those people are now refusing to leave, claiming they have a lease on the property.

The couple bought the home from a bank after it was foreclosed on and abandoned and are the legal owners. Melea King, the couple’s realtor, said, “It seems as though someone … has tried to take possession of the property.” She continued, “We have an agreed signed ratified contract with the bank.” However, the squatters have reportedly put up “private property” and “beware of dog” signs.

The owners called the police to have the squatters removed but were told it was a “civil matter” for the sheriff. The squatters said their uncle had a lease on the home, but King noted, “Once the police were on site, they took a look at the lease and it was not accurate. It was not correct.” She said the couple wants answers from the bank about how the strangers were able to move in, explaining, “Right now my clients are highly upset and we just don’t know what to do at this point. It should not be taking this long for this to be addressed.”
