On Thursday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law that would prohibit abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Governor DeSantis said, “The signing of the bill is the most significant protection for life to be enacted in Florida in a generation.”
The law takes effect July 1, 2022, and does allow exceptions. The first exception is to preserve the life of the mother or prevent a significant risk of serious injury. The second exemption is if the fetus has not reached viability and is deemed to have a fatal fetal abnormality.
Democrat Charlie Crist of Florida, who is eyeing running against DeSantis for Governor tweeted: “Women should make decisions about their own bodies, not governors. I’d veto this bill and any attempt to restrict the right to choose. Full stop.”
Crist was not the only Democrat who decried the new law. President Biden also chimed in: “My Administration will not stand for the continued erosion of women’s constitutional rights.”
A Wall Street Journal poll reported that 48% of people strongly or somewhat favor a bill that prohibits abortion after 15 weeks. 43% of respondents were against these restrictions.
