Dozens of Retired Military Officers Call for Austin and Milley to Resign

Retired military generals have called for Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley to resign. The Washington Times reports that nearly 90 retired military personnel have accused the pair of “negligence” in connection with the botched U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Members of the group “Flag Officers 4 America” wrote a letter stating in part, “The retired Flag Officers signing this letter are calling for the resignation and retirement of the Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) based on negligence in performing their duties primarily involving events surrounding the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. The hasty retreat has left initial estimates at ~15,000 Americans stranded in dangerous areas controlled by a brutal enemy along with ~25,000 Afghan citizens who supported American forces.”

The letter also stated that Milley and Austin “should have recommended against this dangerous withdrawal in the strongest possible terms. If they did not do everything within their authority to stop the hasty withdrawal, they should resign.” It continued saying that if Milley and Austin had pushed back on Biden’s withdrawal plan, they should also resign “as a matter of conscience and public statement.”

The letter demands that Milley and Austin step down on the grounds of “leadership, training, and morale,” accusing them of “mandated emphasis on P.C. ‘wokeness’ related training, which is immensely divisive and damaging to unit cohesion, readiness, and war fighting capability.” They further said that adversaries such as China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea would be looking to take advantage of Afghanistan’s weakness.

Flag Officers 4 America gained popularity in May when they posted another open letter criticizing the FBI and the Supreme Court for disregarding “election irregularities” and casting doubt on Biden’s mental and physical health.

The letter had 87 signatories as of Monday night, including retired Navy Rear Adm. John Poindexter, a former Reagan national security adviser, Rep. Ronny Jackson Republican from Texas, a former Navy rear admiral, and longtime White House physician, Maj. Gen. Joe Arbuckle, who served in Vietnam and led the Army Industrial Operations Command (IOC) at Rock Island, Illinois, and retired Army Brig. Gen. Donald Bolduc, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in New Hampshire next year.

United States officials stated on Monday that the evacuation of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul had been completed. However, they did admit that hundreds of Americans and thousands of Afghan allies had been left behind in the Taliban-controlled territory.
