NYPD on Horseback Chases Down Thief in Times Square

Like a scene straight out of a movie, NYPD chased down a thief on horseback in Times Square — and the whole ordeal was caught on camera.

Around 6:50 p.m. on Saturday, Ignacio Lewis, 34, allegedly stole several pairs of sunglasses. When the street vendor approached and confronted him, Lewis brandished a piece of glass, threatening the vendor.

After the vendor failed to stop the perpetrator himself, he flagged down an officer on horseback. The officer confronted the man who then took off on foot.

The bodycam shows Lewis running with the officer right behind him.

In an effort to evade police, he darted through cars but was ultimately stopped by two other officers who headed him off.

Commissioner Keechant Sewell tweeted, “There was no chance this robbery suspect could out run our 10-foot cop riding Samson! With help from fellow Finest in Times Square, this individual was arrested and charged.”

Lewis is a homeless man and was arrested and charged with menacing, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.
