Federal documents show Princeton University has received millions of dollars in contributions from a Chinese state-sponsored university and the director of a think tank linked to the Chinese Communist Party.
According to the Washington Free Beacon, CCP-controlled Peking University gave Princeton $4.6 million, and Tung Chee-Hwa, the founder of the China-US Exchange Foundation, pledged at least $1 million to the Center on Contemporary China at Princeton University. The Communist Party’s international influence network includes Tung and the exchange foundation.
In June 2018, the Chinese government granted Princeton a five-year, $4.6 million contract to construct research facilities centered on drug discovery and computer science through Peking University’s satellite campus in Shenzhen. In the months following the donation, the Chinese Communist Party strengthened supervision of student activities. Peking University announced that it would take “internal control and measures” to rein in student activist organizations critical of the government.
Peking University’s work in areas of nuclear physics and nuclear weapons development reportedly helps China’s national defense sector. The university also works on classified satellite communications, aircraft propulsion, and computer science.
Additionally, the university worked on semiconductors alongside researchers from Princeton, and Department of Education documents revealed that Princeton received two anonymous $1.3 million gifts from China earlier this year to endow professorships in the school’s computer science department.
According to one national security expert, Princeton’s gifts from China are exactly the type of conduct that the China Initiative was created to track.
Managing director of the American Security Institute, Will Coggin, who compiled the data on China’s donations to Princeton, stated:
“The Chinese Communist Party’s goal is to spread soft power influence while siphoning American research to use for its own nefarious agenda. That’s why it’s exceptionally concerning that Princeton accepted $4.6 million from the Chinese government to research drug development and computer science — two areas where China is outpacing the United States.”
China has made a concerted effort to develop links with American institutions and think tanks in recent years. While some of these collaborations attempt to enhance real student and research exchanges, FBI Director Christopher Wray has expressed concern about China’s expanding use of “non-traditional collectors (of intelligence), especially in the academic setting.”
The Justice Department established the China Initiative in 2018 to combat China’s efforts to steal technology from American businesses and colleges. The Initiative has angered Princeton and other prestigious colleges, who claim it has a “chilling effect” on academic research and encourages “anti-Asian bias.”
In October, almost 200 Princeton University faculty members petitioned Attorney General Merrick Garland to halt the endeavor. They claimed that the investigations were centered on researchers who neglected to disclose their work for the Chinese government rather than economic espionage.
Nothing new here – if you read Kai Strittmatter’s book “We Have Been Harmonized” he describes this long term plan of the CCP – apparently many universities in the US take funds from their “Confucian Society” chapters for exactly this reason.
