Alec Baldwin Sues Subordinates on Film Crew of Movie Rust for Negligence

Actor Alec Baldwin has reportedly sued members of his “Rust” film crew for negligence relating to the on-set shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Someone allegedly inadvertently loaded a live round into a prop gun, which Baldwin fired, apparently unintentionally killing Hutchins.

Since then, though obviously distraught in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Baldwin has actively distanced himself from any blame for the tragedy. He’s even asserted he didn’t pull the trigger.

Now, although there was allegedly negligence (a live round should never make it onto a movie set), there doesn’t seem to have been any malice. No one believes Baldwin wanted to harm his friend, Halyna. However, playing the don’t-blame-me-blame-them game and now suing his subordinates leave a sour taste in observers’ mouths. The pistol was in his hand.

The suit also puts Baldwin in a peculiar position. Being responsible for those employees, if Baldwin proves the film crew guilty, then won’t he be confirming his own ultimate negligence?

And, speaking of bad taste, Baldwin also complained about his lost job opportunities. What about Halyna’s opportunity to live longer and for her husband, Matthew Hutchins, to have had more time with his wife? How is Baldwin the victim?

Matthew said his attorneys have settled their “wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including….” Baldwin. The settlement directs the case will be dismissed if the court approves, and Matthew is to receive a percentage of the movie’s profits.

Baldwin has displayed extraordinary excellence on the screen that doesn’t seem to translate to real life, where his character seems to struggle. Among those struggles, in 2011, American Airlines booted him from a plane for causing a disturbance. In 2013, Baldwin “chewed out” a reporter. And, in 2015, the actor was caught on tape, on the phone with his daughter, calling her “a pig.”

No one wants people to judge them by their worst moments. But Baldwin certainly has had his share of self-inflicted worst moments.
